Author Paul Doiron library speaker

Author Paul Doiron will speak on Wednesday, March 25, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Baxter Memorial Library, 71 South St.

Doiron is the author of a series of mystery novels featuring Maine game warden Mike Bowditch, including the Edgar Award-nominated “The Poacher’s Son.” He will be reading from and discussing his work.

‘Anything Goes’ musical at GHS

Gorham High School’s production of “Anything Goes,” the Cole Porter musical, opens at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 20, for several performances in the McCormack Performance Center at Gorham High School, 41 Morrill Ave.

Other evening performances are Saturday, March 21; Friday, March, 27; and Saturday, March 28. Two matinees are set for 2:30 p.m. on Sundays, March 22 and 29.

Annual writers’ readings

Members of the North Gorham Writers Group are having their annual readings at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, in the United Church of Christ at North Gorham, at the intersection of North Gorham and Standish Neck roads.

Ten members of the group will present excerpts from their own writings in the forms of both prose and poetry.

Everyone is welcome to attend and light refreshments will be available. For more information, call Bob Beane at 749-1857.

Gardeners to meet

Gorham Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, in the First Parish Congregational Church, 1 Church St.Anne Murphy will speak about hummingbirds. The public is welcome and to participate.

Ecumenical Good Friday service

The Gorham Ecumenical Council is sponsoring a service from noon-3 p.m. on Good Friday, April 3, at South Gorham Baptist Church, 53 County Road (Route 22), in South Gorham.

“An ecumenical group of ministers will preach about each of the last words of Christ,” Jude Garland, chairwoman of the council, said. All are welcome to attend.

Labor trafficking is church topic

Karen Burnell, owner of the Karma Fair Trade store in Portland, will speak in the ongoing series Potluck With a Purpose at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 27, at South Gorham Baptist Church, 53 County Road, South Gorham.

Burnell’s topic will be labor trafficking.

“Karen will share her knowledge and experience regarding fair trade items and ways we can be more aware of whether or not human slavery was involved in the production of the things we routinely purchase,” Cindy Elder, organizer of the speaking series said in an announcement. “ Like sex trafficking, labor trafficking is a huge problem, not only in foreign countries, but also right here in the United States.”

Those attending are asked to take some food to share.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service reported on March 12 that the U.S. public debt was $18,153,816,304,576.28.
