PORTLAND — The Maine Maritime Academy women’s lacrosse team fell to Saint Joseph’s College of Maine on Monday evening at Deering Memorial Stadium in Portland.
The game served as the first-ever NCAA women’s lacrosse game in MMA history, as well as the first home game for the Mariners who were the hosts of the matchup.
The Monks had a productive first half, notching 15 goals, led by three goals each from Elizabeth Elcock, Mary Leasure, and Elyse Caiazzo.
In the second half, the Mariner defense held the Monks to just six goals, and Rachael Redles recorded the first goal in MMA women’s lacrosse history with 13:15 remaining in the game.
Patricia Dunford led the Mariners with three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers, while Ally Fuehrer of Freeport recorded two shots, two draw controls, a caused turnover and one ground ball.
Maine Maritime will hit the road for the Inaugural Maritime Cup in Throggs Neck, N.Y. when they take on SUNY Maritime on Friday and Massachusetts Maritime on Saturday.
