This weekend, 38 Windham High School students will perform the one-act play, “The Chronicles of Jane, Book 7,” at the Maine Drama Festival’s regional competition in Falmouth.

The play is about a teenager, Jane, who is procrastinating on her term paper, according to Rob Juergens, a Windham Middle School language arts and social studies teacher who is directing the play. According to Juergens, the show is unique due to its “minimal set.”

“Most of the set is provided by the ensemble cast,” Juergens said. “They make up the walls of her room, they make up the bed and the desk and the chair and the computer.”

“They’re not only the set but they also interact with her in the telling of the story of her writing the term paper,” Juergens added. “So they take on characters as well. They’ll be part of the wall but all of the sudden they will be ‘time’ or ‘procrastination,’ which are characters.”

Jane is played by senior Emily Algeo. According to Juergens, about half of the cast has never acted in a play prior to last weekend, when they put on three shows of “Chronicles” at Windham High School.

“Probably half our cast is people who have not been on stage before,” Juergens said. “They are people who usually work backstage for the shows.”

In the past seven years, Windham High School has reached the festival’s state championships four times, Juergens said. If selected, the Windham students will perform at the state championships in Bangor on March 20 or March 21.

The Windham one-act team will perform at Falmouth High School at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday. Juergens advises theater-goers to arrive at 12:30 or earlier in order to obtain tickets.
