Police from three towns spent several hours overnight Wednesday convincing an apparently suicidal man with a loaded gun to emerge from his South Street home.

The 44-year-old man eventually emerged without the weapon at 12:44 a.m. Thursday and was taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick for evaluation. No injuries were reported during the incident.

Freeport officers were called to the house at 10:15 p.m. by a person who reported that the man was suicidal and had a gun, Freeport police Lt. Susan Nourse said Thursday morning.

No one else was in the home at the time of the incident.

Officers from Yarmouth and Brunswick also went to the scene and used the phone and, eventually, a loudspeaker to convince the man to come out, according to Nourse.

She could not immediately confirm the type of gun and whether it was loaded. Nourse said officers later found additional guns in the house.

Portions of South Street were closed during the incident.

“It was a good outcome all around,” Nourse said. “It took some time to communicate with him, but it was a happy outcome because nobody got hurt and he’ll get the treatment he needs.”
