Three cars were destroyed and others were damaged when a fire spread in the parking lot of the Dana Warp Mill in Westbrook Tuesday.
According to Westbrook Fire Chief Andrew Turcotte, the fire was reported Tuesday at 11:10 a.m. by a Westbrook police officer who noticed smoke and two vehicles on fire. The fire then spread to a third vehicle.
Crews from Westbrook and one from Gorham arrived on scene, which Turcotte said was made difficult by the number of cars in the lot. There were close to 20 firefighters from Westbrook and four from Gorham.
The parking lot services employees and customers of Dana Warp Mill businesses, and has roughly 75 spaces. While three cars were destroyed, three additional vehicles had reported damage.
Most of the vehicle owners noticed the commotion and came outside, Turcotte said, while others eventually were notified of the fire.
Turcotte said the cause of the fire hasn’t officially been determined, but they are leaning toward “improperly disposed smoking material.”
