The NCAA announced that the Polar Bears (23-4) will host a weekend Regional, beginning Friday at Morrell Gymnasium.
Bowdoin has drawn Babson, which comes in with a 20-8 mark. The game is expected to begin at 7 p.m., after the opening round matchup between Ithaca (22-5) and Mount St. Vincent (22-5).
The winners will meet on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Tickets will be available one hour prior to game time each day. There will be no presale of tickets. Tickets will be sold at 4 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on Saturday. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for seniors, students and children. Children ages 2 and under will be admitted free.
Bowdoin will make its 15th appearance in the Division III national tournament. The Polar Bears have advanced to the “Sweet Sixteen” on 10 occasions, including five “Elite Eight” appearances and a trip to the D-III title game in 2004.
All three games will be carried live by the Northeast Sports Network.
The news wasn’t good for the Bowdoin men. Despite a solid resume, one that included the No. 2 seed in the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament and advancing to the NESCAC semifinals, the Polar Bears were left out of the 62-team field.
Meanwhile, Trinity, Bates, Amherst and NESCAC champ Wesleyan advanced.
The college playing careers of Bowdoin’s John Swords, Bryan Hurley and Keegan Pieri has come to an end.
Swimming
Five members of the Bowdoin women’ team have qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship meet in Shenandoah, Texas, March 18- 21.
Bowdoin’s 200 freestyle relay team of Mariah Rawding, Patty Boyer, Bridget Killian and Sophia Walker qualified for the championship (seeded 15th, 1:35.08), as did the Polar Bears’ 400 freestyle relay quartet of Rawding, Killian, Lela Garner and Walker (seeded 10th, 3:28.64).
Individually, Rawding earned a bid to compete in the 200-yard breaststroke (seeded 16th, 2:20.52) and will also compete in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
The bids cap a fantastic winter for the Polar Bears, who earned their best-ever finish at the NESCAC Championship. The quintet of swimmers are the most the Polar Bears have sent to nationals in over a decade.
The championships will be held at the Conroe ISD Natatorium. The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and the City of Shenandoah will serve as the hosts. Student-athletes qualified for the swimming portion of the championships by meeting the established minimum time for the events in which they entered.
