
In a game rescheduled from a Jan. 27 due to weather, the Eagles knocked down 13 treys and committed just three turnovers to upend the Polar Bears for the first time in eight meetings between the schools. Husson improved to 18-5 this season, while Bowdoin fell to 17-7 and hosts Williams in a NESCAC quarterfinal on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Willis went 12-for-12 from the free-throw line and 5-of-8 from 3-point range to lead four Husson players in double digits. Trevon Butler scored 14, Raheem Anderson netted 12 and Jacob Moore added 11 for Husson.
Lucas Hausman ended with 17 points, while John Swords scored 16 with nine rebounds and six blocks. Matt Palecki notched a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Bryan Hurley had 13 points as well for the Polar Bears.
The Eagles came out firing with seven 3-pointers in the opening stanza, taking their biggest lead of the game at 33-17 with 4:09 left in the first half. Bowdoin finished the half on a 10-0 run and close the gap to 33-27 at the break.
Husson expanded its lead to 13 early in the second half, 44-31, but Bowdoin, sparked by plays on both ends of the court by Swords, scored the next 13 points to deadlock the contest at 44 with 11:29 to go.
The Eagles responded with a 16-7 surge that gave the visitors a nine-point lead, 60-51, with 2:30 to play.
Bowdoin owned a 44-28 edge on the glass, but Husson scored 17 points off 16 Polar Bears turnovers.
Binkhorst, Hausman honored
Bowdoin senior Sara Binkhorst has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Binkhorst enjoyed a record-breaking weekend as the Polar Bears closed out their regular season as the No. 2 seed in the NESCAC.
On Friday at Bates, Binkhorst buried a schoolrecord seven 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 29 points as Bowdoin earned a road win over the Bobcats. In the regular season finale at Tufts, Binkhorst led all players with 23 points and became the 14th player in Bowdoin history to surpass the 1,000-point plateau.
For the week, she connected on a mind-boggling 85.7 percent (12-of-15) from 3- point range and averaged 26 points, four assists and 1.5 steals.
It is the second time this season that Binkhorst has earned the league’s weekly honor, as the senior guard also claimed the award on Jan. 12.
The Polar Bears (21-3) will host Middlebury (11-13) on Saturday in a NESCAC Quarterfinal game at Morrell Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Hausman was also honored by the NESCAC, winning the Men’s Basketball Player of the Week award.
It is the second straight week that Hausman has earned the league’s weekly award.
Hausman enjoyed a record-setting weekend to propel Bowdoin to its highest ever seed for the conference tourney. The junior guard tied the school record with 44 points on 20-for-25 shooting from the field on Friday as the Polar Bears defeated Bates, 98-70. His 20 made field goals were also a program record.
On Saturday against Tufts, Hausman again led all scorers with a game-high 16 points to go with seven rebounds in a 57-54 defensive struggle.
