ALFRED — Firefighters from Alfred and the surrounding area were called to York County Jail Tuesday afternoon, but outlying departments were turned back once firefighters determined the fire was confined to a clothes dryer.
Alfred’s full-time firefighter, Chris Carpenter, said lint in the dryer had caught on fire, and that the fire was out when the Alfred Department arrived.
No one was injured and damage was confined to the clothes dryer.
When the jail, which can house up to 300 inmates, along with an array of jail and sheriff’s office staff, sounds a fire alarm, surrounding departments respond as a matter of course, Carpenter said, and then are dismissed according to the severity of the situation.
