The obstacle course event Tough Mudder, which made its first appearance in Maine this past summer, will return to Westbrook in 2015.

According to a Jan. 15 press release by the organizers, Tough Mudder “Great Northeast” will be held at Sunset Ridge Golf Links in Westbrook on Sept. 26-27.

In the press release, Tough Mudder Event Director Jon Barker said the organization is “thrilled to be returning to Westbrook.”

“Our strong partnership with the community of Westbrook was a key factor in the success of last year’s event, and we’re looking forward to building on that success to provide another life-changing event for local and visiting participants, as well as to provide a positive economic impact on the region as Mudders travel from surrounding states and across the country to see what’s in store for 2015,” he said.

This past summer, an estimated 13,000 people traversed the obstacle course over two days in August. Tough Mudder, which also supports fundraising for organizations such as the Wounded Warrior Project, has become a worldwide phenomenon with its ever-evolving and creative obstacles geared toward team participation.

The press release also says there will be new and updated obstacles for the course, which is more than 10 miles long. New this year are “‘Dead Ringer,’ where the contestant must transverse across a series of inclined pegs using handheld rings, and ‘Cry Baby,’ a tunnel crawl through a tear-gas-like substance.”

Bill Baker, Westbrook’s assistant city administrator for business and community relations, said Monday that he’s also “thrilled beyond words” that the event organizers wanted to return to the city.

Baker said it’s clear that Westbrook has “demonstrated its ability to hold a world-class event” like Tough Mudder, and is excited for a repeat chance to bring thousands of people into Westbrook.

Being held a month later than last year, the goal is to bring in a large number of visitors after the peak summer months, Baker said, for an added boost to the local hospitality industry.

“We hope it will have an even more profound effect,” he said.

Registration for the event is open already, with contestant and spectator tickets available at www.toughmudder.com.
