ALFRED — Folks interested in what’s happening with York County Commissioners may soon be able to find out online and perhaps on cable television.

Commissioners are looking at offering live streaming of their meetings. The videos would also be archived on their website for viewing anytime.

It is a prospect commissioners have examined before and at one point, in 2012, the county government used YouTube, a website for posting videos online, to provide folks with a look at some special events. Then came issues with video equipment, but those issues now seem to be resolved.

The filming was brought up at Wednesday’s regular meeting by County Commissioner Michael Cote.

“Its been a while since we discussed it,” he said. “We’d talked about getting the cameras operating and getting these meetings streamed.”

County Manager Greg Zinser said the equipment is now working.

“We’re ready to go,” he said, adding the county government is working with a company called Town Hall Streams, which provides municipalities and counties with streaming and video archiving, on the project.

There’s no word, as yet, on a start date.

Commissioner Marston Lovell asked that the board look at providing CDs so community cable television channels could also play them.

Zinser said that could be a possibility; Commissioner Gary Sinden pointed out that once the meetings are streamed on the county’s website, cable television stations could pick them up there, without needing a CD.

When the project is finalized, and filming begins, videos will be available at www.yorkcountyme.gov.

Wednesday was the York County Commission’s first meeting of the new year.

Commissioners unanimously re-elected Sallie Chandler of Lebanon as chairwoman. Chandler represents District 1, which includes Acton, Cornish, Lebanon, Limerick, Limington, Newfield, North Berwick, Parsonsfield and South Berwick. Richard Dutremble of Biddeford, who represents District 2, was elected vice-chairman. His district includes Arundel, Biddeford, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport. Both were re-elected to represent their districts Nov. 4.

Lovell, the newest county commissioner, took office Jan. 1, after his Nov. 4 election victory. He represents District 3, which includes Buxton, Dayton, Hollis, Old Orchard Beach and Saco.

Other commissioners are Cote, who represents District 4, which includes Alfred, Lyman, Sanford, Shapleigh and Waterboro, and Gary Sinden, who represents District 5, which includes Eliot, Kittery, Ogunquit, Wells and York.

Commissioners, Zinser and union representatives Rachel Sherman and Matt Nadeau discussed the county’s health insurance contract, which was renewed late last year, and some communication and timing issues surrounding the renewal.

They pledged to work on resolving those issues as much as possible under the restrictions imposed by renewal deadlines, and will convene a meeting of the insurance committee to begin reviewing possible options for next year.
