BRUNSWICK

Bowdoin College remains on track to name a new president sometime this year, although there doesn’t appear to be an exact date.

“The college will name a new president in 2015 and will bid farewell to Barry Mills, who has served as Bowdoin’s president since 2001,” said Doug Cook, director of news and media relations, in an email to The Times Record. “Since the search committee is still at work, there is no definite date as to when a new president will be named, but we do expect the announcement to come during the first few months of 2015.”

Mills announced in April 2014 that he would step down in June 2015 at the conclusion of his 14th year as head of Maine’s oldest college.

Prior to becoming Bowdoin’s 14th president, Mills served as deputy presiding partner of the Debevoise & Plimpton law firm in New York City.

Mills graduated from Bowdoin in 1972.

James E. Staley of New York City is chairman of the committee charged with searching for Mills’ replacement. That committee is in the midst of interviewing candidates, according to a December article in The Bowdoin Orient.

Also in 2015, the college will open its newest building at 216 Maine St. later on this month, said Cook.

Bowdoin acquired that property in 2007, using a former building there for the college’s theater and dance departments, and as a digital media lab. It was previously occupied by a travel agency, but had been vacant since fall 2013.

In its place, the college has erected a three-story Federalist-style office building.

As far as what else to expect out of Bowdoin College in 2015, Cook added, “As this will be a year of transition, any new major initiatives seem unlikely at this point.”

“The college will also work to meet its current goals of raising in excess of $100 million by June 30 for need-based financial aid and additional resources for Coastal Studies and Digital and Computational Studies,” he said.

Bowdoin College will admit the class of 2019 in March, said Cook.
