GORHAM — The indoor track and field season began in earnest on Saturday with the USM relays. The kickoff event featured teams from all around the state, and some local athletes began their seasons with standout performances.
Wells’ Hunter McDonnell won the boys 1,600-meter run, and also earned a national elite score with 2,772 points in the pentathlon.
Other winners in boys events were the Thornton Academy 4×400-meter relay team, Thornton’s Derek Boissonnault in the 55-meter dash and Sanford’s Peter Hegarty in the pole vault.
Boissonnault’s time of 6.77 seconds in the 55 gave him a slim edge over Sanford’s Peyton Wiegand, who finished second in a time of 6.80 seconds.
The Wells girls took first place in the 4×400-meter relay in a time of 4:34.68, while Thornton’s Allie Pettaway finished second and third, respectively, in the triple jump and 55-meter dash.
