Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office on Wednesday afternoon were still trying to determine the cause of the devastating fire at the Sebago Lake State Park headquarters building.

The blaze, first noticed at 6:31 a.m. Wednesday by a passing motorist, appeared to start in the back corner of a meeting room in the center of the L-shaped building, Naples Deputy Fire Chief Andrew Burnham said. Due to the amount of damage, Burnham said, it would be “pretty hard to tell exactly” where the fire started.

Crews from Casco, Raymond, Naples, Bridgton, Sebago and Norway responded. Burnham said the fire was under control within two hours and that no one was hurt.

Park Manager Matthew McGuire, who lives across the Songo River with sight of the headquarters and awoke Wednesday to arriving fire trucks, said historic blueprints and plans stored in file cabinets were lost in the blaze. Offices, meeting space and supplies were also destroyed in the building that was constructed in 1961 and had a slab foundation. Park officials, he said, have set up temporary office space in a maintenance building. He said online park reservations would be available as usual at the beginning of the year.
