They’ve pedaled unicycles before the eyes of hundreds of fans at Red Claw games, crowds at local parades and festivals, and even WOW-ed the masses at the nation’s Capitol — often juggling at the same time.
So it shouldn’t be a surprise that in the spring, the Woodside One Wheelers will return to Washington, D.C., to participate for the third time in the Cherry Blossom Parade on April 11. But first they will make just a little pit stop April 8 in Philadelphia to perform in the half-time show for the 76ers.
The group is looking for a little help getting to their big-time venues and has started a GoFundMe page.
The Woodside One Wheelers is a performing circus arts troupe based out of Woodside Elementary School in Topsham. Members range from third graders to the oldest performer who is in grade 12. Currently, more than 60 members at all levels practice weekly and many attend week-long camps. Nearly 200 students have participated in WOW in the last eight years.
WOW was established in 2006 and is directed by Eric Pulsifer, a physical education teacher at the elementary school. The troupe presented its first show with 25 stu- dents performing juggling and stilt-walking acts, and three students performing on unicycles. With more than 80 performances under its belt since that first show, the program has grown to include more than 90 students — at least 55 unicycle riders, 35 riders on 5-foot giraffe unicycles and four bold riders performanceready on the 7-foot threewheel unicycle.
Helping make this program so successful, many parents and friends support WOW “because of the enthusiasm, commitment and respect we see in our daughters and sons, and their coaches,” the GoFundMe page states.
Throughout the school year, students work hard on learning and improving new skills, including unicycling, juggling, walking globe and much more. Their character and confidence grows as they learn the importance of setting goals and working hard to achieve them and also performing in front of large crowds.
Pulsifer said, “The kids in the Woodside One Wheelers learn so much more than just how to juggle or ride a unicycle. They learn the true meaning of hard work and true grit. As their coach, I am so proud of each and every kid who has ever been part of the group.”
It’s been extra busy for the WOW organization, Pulsifer said, because in addition to practice and performances, the TV show incredible- MAINE has been filming the group and plans to do a halfshow on the group. The show airs Saturday mornings on the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. Filming will being going on Friday when WOW shows their mad skills during the Sparkle Celebration’s Parade of Lights in Freeport.
