HARPSWELL

A Brunswick man died on the way to the hospital Saturday following a two-vehicle crash on Harpswell Islands Road in Harpswell.

The Cumberland County Sheriff ’s Office and Harpswell Fire and Rescue responded to Harpswell Islands Road at Garrison Cove Road for the crash at 7:10 p.m., a release from the sheriff ’s office states. Eric Allred, 28, of Brunswick, was pronounced dead by Harpswell rescue personnel while on the way to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Allred was the sole occupant in a 1998 Subaru Legacy traveling north on Harpswell Islands Road when he lost control of the car, crossed into the southbound lane and crashed into a 2014 GMC Acadia driven by Lauren Caswell, 39, of Northfield, Vermont. She and the other occupants of the Acadia, her husband, and 2- and 6-year-old sons, both secured in safety seats, sustained only bumps and bruises.

Police say Allred had to be extricated from the totaled Subaru and was pronounced dead by Harpswell rescue personnel while en route to Mid Coast Hospital. His family has been notified.

The scene was reconstructed by the Cumberland County Accident Reconstruction Team. Speed is believed to be a factor, but alcohol is not. The investigation is currently ongoing.
