Yes, it’s Thanksgiving, and the Sanford Salvation Army was able to distribute 70 food baskets this year. Pictured here with the holiday birds are Deborah Berry, Lt. Erin Smullen and Jessica LaRose. Each client was provided with turkey or small chicken, potatoes, onions, pickles, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, cranberry drink mix, pumpkin pie mix, carrots and cake, said Smullen. She said applications for Christmas assistance will be taken Dec. 1-6 during the usual business hours at the headquarters at 835 Main St. The Salvation Army is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; it closes from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch. We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
