TOPSHAM — The Topsham Community Fund Committee is seeking community comments on its proposed 2014 annual report and recommendations for funding future community development projects.
The committee will hear comments on its annual report and plan during a public workshop Thursday at 6 p.m. at the municipal building, located at 100 Main St.
Over the past several years, Topsham Community Fund reports have recommended that Topsham continue to allocate funding to building the next phase of the Topsham Bike Path.
That funding effort is expected to be completed in the current fiscal year, so next year will be the first year the committee will consider other uses for any TCF funds, including building up a reserve fund for future projects.
For this reason public input regarding possible uses for TCF funds will be particularly valuable this year and in future years.
In a new process approved by Topsham voters in 2011, the Topsham Community Fund replaced the “Quality of Life” ordinance that had been in place for approximately five years. Instead of mandating a “quality of life” budget line item, which voters had often rejected at town meetings, the town created a committee to study community development projects, then make recommendations based on its findings. The public workshop is held as part of that process.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
