YARMOUTH
Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critic’s Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards, and two Obie Awards, “Urinetown” is a tale of love, greed, and revolution. The show is set in a town plagued by a 20-year drought, where water has become so scarce that private toilets have become unthinkable. At the mercy of a single dominating corporation which maintains a monopoly on the town’s public amenities, the destitute citizens must pay towering taxes and fines to carry out their most private and basic of needs. Out of the mass of the pitiable, a hero rises to lead his fellow citizens against the tyrannical regime. Drawing from West Side Story, Chicago, and Les Misérables among others, the show irreverently pays witty homage to the great American musical theatre tradition. Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective of one of America’s greatest art forms.
According to veteran Yarmouth High School Playmakers director Betsy Puelle: “Yarmouth High School is the first high school in Maine to tackle this hilarious and thought-provoking show. I trusted that with our proven track record of high-quality, highly entertaining fall musicals, we could take on this sprawling and challenging musical comedy that has some real societal issues wrapped up in its clever spoofing style. Our cast and crew of over 100 (including a live pit band) have been working together approximately 15 hours a week since Labor Day — nearly 200 hours all told — to present as high a quality production as we possibly can. I would say that if you’re someone who loves musical comedies and has ever gone to the bathroom, you’re in for a treat!
“On a more serious note, I am also very pleased that the Playmakers have made the connection to the real-world issues “Urinetown” addresses by choosing to donate a portion of proceeds to the Water.Org non-profit group to actually help solve some of the issues that this satirical comedy so creatively addresses.”
Ticket prices range from $5-$12.
