SACO — Alfred E. Loranger, 94, of Portland and formerly of Saco, passed away late Friday evening on Nov. 7, 2014 at his home, surrounded by family.

He was born in Biddeford on April 20, 1920, a son of Alfred N. and Florida (Lamirande) Loranger.

He was educated in the parochial school system and attended St. Louis High School, where he played on the Eagles’ first football team in 1934.

Fred was drafted into the United States Army, where he proudly marched down Congress Street July 4, 1942 leaving his hometown, family and cat behind. Fred was stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington, before being shipped to the Pacific Theater for 33 months. Fred was honorably discharged from the Army in November 1945, attaining the rank of staff sergeant, returning home to Biddeford to friends and family and to learn that his cat had left home shortly after he did three years earlier. Fred loved to tell the story of how he was home three days after the war and came home one evening to find his cat waiting for him on the stone wall in front of the Wentworth Street family home.

He was employed by Pepperell Manufacturing in Biddeford for 30 years, retiring in 1984, and began his pursuit of the passion of golf.

Fred was a 35-year member of the Old Orchard Beach Country Club, where he recorded three hole-in-ones during that time. Fred was a lifetime Boston Red Sox and New York Giants fan, and remained interested in sports until his final weekend. He served as the door monitor for three cats he resided with.

Mr. Loranger was a parishioner of the former Notre Dame de Lourdes Church in Saco.

He was preceded in death by: his wife, Simone Dubuque Loranger, on June 3, 2014; one brother, Urbain Loranger; and two sisters, Yvonne Frappier and Pauline Nadeau.

He is survived by: three sons, Gerard Loranger and his wife Jane of Saco, David Loranger and his wife Janet Kantz of Portland and Guy Loranger and his wife Shirley of Dracut, Massachusetts; six grandchildren, Patrick, Jessica, Jerry, Samantha, Michael and Melissa; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
