Westbrook’s annual Halloween on Main Street event was busier than ever Friday, as hundreds of families packed the closed road between Spring and Mechanic streets.
The event, organized by the Westbrook/Gorham Community Chamber, has been a Westbrook staple since the late 1990s. Last month, the chamber announced it would not be organizing the event in the future, but is instead looking for another civic organization to step up, putting a cloud of mystery over what could transpire next year.
City Councilor John O’Hara, at his normal table alongside members of the Westbrook Fire Department near Bank of America, said he loves handing out candy every year. This year, he said, he had 5,000 pieces of candy ranging from Double Bubble gum to Tootsie Rolls.
Further down, in front of Portland Pie, the restaurant was booming, with residents of all ages coming out the doors dressed as various ghouls and ghosts.
