American Legion Auxiliary Meets

Windham’s American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3, at the Veterans Center in North Windham. If you are not a member and are interested in finding out more, you’re welcome to attend.

Raffle Calendar

Windham School Age Child Care Association (SACC) is selling raffles for a calendar for the month of November. Buy the whole calendar for $25 and be entered in a raffle drawing for every day for the month of November or buy a few days (your choice of days.) Changes to Medicare

Southern Maine Agency on Aging doesn’t want seniors to miss the Medicare Open Enrollment Period, and appointments for information fill up fast. SMAA will have six appointments available in Windham each Tuesday morning during Open Enrollment. We’ve been advised that recently, one client was saved about $2,000 for 2015 by changing her drug plan and pharmacy. On Tuesdays, Nov. 4 and 18, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m.-noon. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon each Tuesday from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, through Medicare Open Enrollment Period. In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps, and fuel assistance can be arranged. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will continue at the same times and location on first and third Tuesdays of the month in 2015. Windham Land Trust Annual Meeting

On Wednesday, Oct. 29, the annual meeting of Windham Land Trust will be held at 7 p.m. at the Windham Public Library. A review of the past year’s projects that were completed and what is planned for the following year will be held. Everyone is invited to attend and share their ideas and interest.

Cancer Support Group

Monday, Oct. 27, the Windham Cancer Support Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Windham Public Library. Two speakers will be at the meeting. Psychic Barbara Balkin will be returning and will bring Cheryl Banfield who is an Intuitive Healer. All are welcome. For directions or information, call 892-7750.

Thanksgiving Baskets

From now through Nov. 3, applications are being taken at Windham Food Pantry for a Thanksgiving Dinner basket. Sign up at Food Pantry, Monday-through Thursday, between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. and bring proof that you are a Windham resident – something like a utility bill that shows your name and address. If you or your business would like to donate turkeys or sponsor a Thanksgiving basket for a Windham family, please contact Collette at the Food Pantry, 892-1931.

Open House Parson Smith House

There will be an open house and tours at Parson Smith House on River Road. Hosted by Windham Historical Society, the historic home will be open on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 25-26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 650-7484 or 892-1433 or email: info@windhamhistorical.org to find out more. This is a rare opportunity to visit this 1764 historic house and it’s the 250th anniversary of its construction. Birthday cake will be served. A $10 donation is suggested for adults. Children under 12, no charge. Donations to the Society are used for educational outreach and operation of the Society, which is staffed by volunteers.

Detective Fiction Discussion

“Detective Fiction in the 20th Century: a Notion of Evil” begins on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 6:15 p.m. at the library. There will be five sessions with the last meeting on March 31, 2015. Books to be read and discussed in this series include: “The Maltese Falcon” by Dashiell Hammett and “A is for Alibi” by Sue Grafton. This is part of the “Let’s Talk About It” program and is supported by the Maine Humanities Council Maine Center for the Book in cooperation with the Maine State Library. Surprises at the Clothes Closet

Once again, generous donations of fall clothing and household linens have filled the racks and shelves at Windham’s free Clothes Closet. This is a reminder to you or someone you may know, of the existence of this wonderful resource we have for anyone in Windham or neighboring towns who may be in need of clothing, for work or otherwise, to stop in on Monday or Tuesday morning. The volunteers who manage this shop have everything sorted by size and hung up on racks. Lots of great looking shoes, jackets and coats, baby clothes, children’s clothing and so much more. Everything is free. The Closet is located in the basement of the Human Services building, across from Friends Church on Route 202 just below Windham Center.
