Safety Fair Success

The Standish Public Safety Fair was held on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Standish Fire Barn. It was once again a huge success with approximately 100 kids and their families in attendance. There was a firefighter obstacles course for the kids, an extrication demonstration, fun and exciting giveaways like bicycles, pumpkins and fire prevention goodie bags and they even had a bounce house.

The programs represented at the fair this year were Standish Recreation, Standish Public Works, Standish Fire-EMS, ACO, Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff’s Office Explorers and VIPS, the American Legion, Lost Dog Recovery Program, Hemlock Valley Animal Rescue, Parent Teacher Association and the Public Safety Committee.

This year’s fair was made possible through the generous local support of Wescott and Sons, Poland Spring water, Standish Hardware, Roadway Trailers, and the Gorham Fire Department.

Saturday, Oct. 25, will be the final market of the inaugural season at the Steep Falls Farmer’s Market. Now is a great time to stock up on all-natural beef and pork and produce for storage, like carrots, onions, and squash as well as fresh lettuce, arugula, kale and beet greens. They also will have fresh garlic and seed garlic for sale. You can even take care of next year’s produce and/or seedlings by signing up for a Produce or Seedling CSA with Sweet Relief Farm.

The Steep Falls Market has many extra vendors for October, with a slant to the market called ‘Craftober’. Just a sampling of the many crafts that will be available are birdhouses and bird feeders; artisan jewelry, some made with sea glass; antique jewelry, a great treasure hunt at this stand; traditional and folk crafts including very unique dream catchers; neat self-illustrating children’s books which have been selling like crazy; decorated witches hats for Halloween; homemade bath products, milk soap, laundry soap and foot soaks; gift jars of pepper jelly, tomato jam, and salsa; natural dye kits; neat crocheted holiday ornaments and beautiful wood cut ornaments; and stunning watercolor note cards.

Definitely worth the trip! The market runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Steep Falls Village Park located at the intersections of routes 113 and 11.

Nick MacConnell, 13, formerly of Standish, volunteers to help out with the children’s events at the Standish Public Safety Fair, held on Saturday, Oct. 11. The child-sized gear was a big hit with the kids and the parents. Some brave souls even took a ride up high on the ladder.
