NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — State and community leaders are launching a new effort to include Newport on the United Nations World Heritage List highlighting the world’s most important natural wonders and cultural sites.
The Newport Daily News reports that Pieter Roos, executive director of the Newport Restoration Foundation, said Newport is seeking to get on the list of cultural sites.
Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee announced a 32-member Newport World Heritage Commission on Tuesday.
A “Colonial Newport” nomination in 2007 focused on the city as an early center of religious freedom, civic culture and learning.
Members of the former Newport World Heritage Committee who prepared nominations for Newport in 2007 honored its colonial heritage and focused on the Gilded Age.
The commission appointed by Chafee plans to have its nomination completed for submission by 2016.
