Two passengers were killed Sunday night in Bridgton when the driver of a car that was trying to pass another car on Route 302 lost control and struck a tree, police said.

Bridgton Police Chief Kevin Schofield said the driver of the car was transported to Bridgton Hospital, treated for minor injuries and released.

Two passengers in the vehicle died in the crash, which took place near the Naples town line. Schofield said the names of the deceased won’t be released until their relatives have been notified.

The preliminary investigation indicates that excessive speed contributed to the crash, which occurred at 5:50 p.m., police said.
