Barbara Thorpe of Casco has been charged with operating under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident after striking two vehicles and crashing into a house on Route 302 Friday night.

Thorpe is the former longtime library director at Raymond Village Library.

According to Lt. Donald Foss of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, on Oct. 17 at about 8:35 p.m., the Cumberland County Regional Communications Center received several 911 calls of a vehicle operating on the wrong side of the road traveling eastbound on Route 302 in Naples.

In less than two minutes, Foss said, subsequent calls were received reporting three separate motor vehicle crashes. One vehicle reported being “side-swiped” as it was crossing the Naples Causeway bridge. Moments later, a second vehicle approximately 1 mile away, reported being struck by a vehicle in the wrong lane. The offending vehicle then careened off the road and struck a residential home at the intersection of Roosevelt Trail and Songo School Road, Foss said.

Sheriff’s deputies investigated the crashes and determined that they were all related and caused by Thorpe, 65, of 16 Raymond Cape Road in Casco.

Thorpe was driving a 2011 Toyota Tacoma pickup and was alone in her vehicle. She was uninjured. The first vehicle struck on the Naples Causeway bridge was occupied by a woman and two 14-year-old girls. The second vehicle struck was occupied by one woman. All drivers and passengers were not injured.

The home was occupied at the time of the collision, however, no was injured.

Thorpe was transported to the Cumberland County Jail. Her bail is set at $200 cash. Thorpe is scheduled to appear in Bridgton District Court on Dec. 16.
