BIDDEFORD — University of New England seniors Margaret Palmer and Lindsey Monaco accounted for three goals and two assists to lead the Nor’easters to a 4-1 win over University of Southern Maine in non-conference women’s soccer action Tuesday evening at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The victory extends the Nor’easters’ winning streak over the Huskies to seven games while improving on their best start since the 2011 season. USM suffered its seventh straight defeat to fall to 2-11-1.

Big Blue put the game out of reach in the early going, scoring four times in the opening 33:18. The initial goal came in large part to a strong effort by first-year Morgan Rodway, who carried the ball down the left side before crossing to Palmer, who converted from close range. Monaco was credited with a secondary assist on the play.

UNE doubled its lead 10 minutes later when Monaco found first-year Becca Murphyfor her team-leading eighth goal of the season.

The Nor’easters would extend their lead to 4-0 in the 28th minute and 34th minutes when Monaco and Palmer went for back-to-back goals back — each set-up by junior Tori Field.

Southern Maine avoided a shutout in the second half on a corner kick in the 63rd minute. Sophomore Analies Ross-Dyjak started the set piece from the right corner, and first-year Dayna Staffiere converted a header to score her first collegiate goal.

For the game the Nor’easters had a commanding advantage in shots (24-3) and corner kicks (9-4).

UNE had three goalkeepers see action, with sophomore Brielle Robinson earning the win with a clean slate over the initial 36:57 of play.

Sophomore Marissa Temple totaled nine stops for Southern Maine, which travels to Western Connecticut State University for a noon start on Saturday.

The Nor’easters host Nichols College that same day at 1 p.m.

Men’s Soccer

BIDDEFORD — Senior Sean Goodrich scored with 5:35 remaining in the second overtime period to give the University of New England men’s soccer team a 2-1 win over University of Southern Maine in a non-conference match played Tuesday afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The victory runs the Nor’easters’ unbeaten streak to six matches while upping their season mark to 8-3-2. Southern Maine dropped its fourth consecutive start to fall to 2-11-2.

Goodrich ended the contest when he took a short pass from junior Tyler Garnick and drove a left-footed shot from just inside the box high into the upper right-hand corner of the goal. It was the second golden goal of the season for the Nor’easters, who are 2-0-2 in overtime matches.

UNE, which started slowly and trailed 1-0 at intermission, tied the game in the 51st minute on a marker from Garnick. Graduate student Matthew Christie fed Garnick, who set-up near the right post to convert Christie’s pass.

The Huskies opened the scoring in the 31st minute as senior Tyler Rand took advantage of UNE turnover in its defensive end and deposited a high shot into the right portion of the goal. First-year Colin Samuell headed the errant Nor’easter clearing attempt to Rand to get the play going.

Southern Maine carried play for much of the first frame, leading in shots 6-4 at halftime.

After halftime was a much different story for the Nor’easters, as Big Blue peppered USM sophomore keeper Elijah Leverett the rest of the way. UNE had 21 shots in the second half and six in the two extra sessions to lead 31-9 in that category for the game.

Leverett put forth a strong performance for the Huskies, racking up 11 stops, including a few brilliant ones late to keep the match tied.

Senior Aidan McParland came on at halftime to earn the win for UNE. He had one stop, and junior Nate Diffin registered four in the first frame.

Up next for both teams are conference home games Saturday. The Huskies host Western Connecticut State University at noon, and UNE entertains Nichols College at 1 p.m.

Women’s Volleyball

BIDDEFORD — Sophomore Grayson Szczepaniak had 10 kills with a .471 attack percentage and senior Leah Janelle added eight winners along with five aces to help lead the University of New England to a 3-0 win over Curry College in Commonwealth Coast Conference women’s volleyball action Tuesday evening at the Harold Alfond Forum. Set scores were 25-14, 25-12, and 25-7.

Big Blue (8-12) moves to 3-1 in CCC contests, while the Colonels drop back to 6-16 overall (0-5 CCC). The Nor’easters have swept Curry in each of the four all-time meetings.

First-year Brooke Gibbons setup the UNE attack with 26 assists. Classmate Courtney Lambrese chipped in with five kills in seven attempts, and put up three blocks. Sophomore Nikki Mathewson had a team-high eight digs, while first-year Teddi Kramer and Janelle recorded six apiece.
