Teen center hosts successful fundraiser

The My Place Teen Center’s “Fund-A-Kid” fundraising event helped the organization raise $17,000 toward programming and other costs for youth who utilize the center.

According to a press release this week, the event, held on Thursday, Sept. 25, drew some 150 people.

Searching for Steve Dyer

Roger LeBorgne of Westbrook is hoping to locate the boy he saved 64 years ago from the icy Presumpscot River.

LeBorgne remembered the boy’s name was Steve Dyer, who fell through the ice near the Black Bridge. The boy was 11 years old at the time.

Anyone with information about Dyer or his whereabouts is asked to call LeBorgne at 854-4967.

Seniors meeting

City Councilor Mike Sanphy will speak about the city’s history when Westbrook Senior Citizens meet at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, in Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

Seniors will visit Indian Head in Lincoln, N.H., on Dec. 7 and travel to Ireland May 2-9. For more information, call 854-2705 or 883-5046.

Volunteers sought for library book sale

The Friends of Walker Memorial Library need some volunteers to help with its upcoming book sale.

The two-day sale is noon-4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, and 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11. The sale includes softcover and hardcover books, DVDs, and miscellaneous other media for sale. Prices are $2 for a hardcover, $1 for larger size trade paperback books, and 25 cents or five for $1 for regular-size smaller paperbacks.

“We need volunteers to help us move books from the Friends shelves to our Event Room,” said Kelly Day, vice president of the friends group.

Those willing to volunteer or join the group should call 239-7734.

Weiss to read poetry

David C. Weiss will read from his recent book of poetry, “A Heart on Fire, Poems from the Flames,” 6:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, at Walker Memorial Library, 800 Main St., Westbrook.

Weiss will complement the reading with performing music on the Shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute played in Buddhist meditation.
