‘Suspended Worlds’ historical program

Buxton-Hollis Historical Society will host a program about vintage theater scenery 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 100 Main St. (Route 4A), Buxton.

Guest speaker Christine Hadsel, director of Curtains Without Borders, will present “Suspended Worlds” -historic theater scenery in Maine.

“A hundred years ago, grand drapes and painted backdrops were a primary artistic feature in the cultural life of almost every village and town in northern New England,” a historical society release said. “Curtains Without Borders is dedicated to documenting and preserving this historic painted theater scenery.”

A slide show will depict the painted curtains that were found town halls, Granges, theaters and opera houses. The theatre curtain from the Hollis I.O.O.F. Hall will be displayed.

Most of the curtains were created between 1890 and 1940, although on rare occasions, pieces painted after 1940 are also included. Suggested Donation is $10; Seniors $8. Donations will benefit restoration of the historical society’s history center, to develop and build exhibits from our collections, and to pay f or operating expenses. Like us on Facebook.

Art show, sale

Saco River Art League of Buxton is sponsoring its fifth annual Art at Marrett show and sale 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5, at the Marrett House, 40 Ossipee Trail East, in Standish.

Susan Orfant of the art league said admission is free. The event includes free Marrett House tours, baked goods, children’s creativity table, artists at work, music, games, and fun.

Sales benefit Marrett House/Historic New England, Standish Historical Society, area artists and artisans.

Merrill awarded scholarship

The Maine Grocers & Food Producers Association has announced that Cassidy L. Merrill of Buxton is one of its 2014 scholarship recipients.

Merrill, who is attending Endicott College, works at Plummer’s Shop ‘n Save in Buxton.
