Man nabbed in Pownal

2 min read

After leading police on a chase Tuesday, a juvenile male with five outstanding warrants was finally arrested Wednesday at a campground in Pownal.

According to Capt. Don Goulet of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began at 3:35 p.m. on Tuesday when sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence on Mayall Road in Gray. The caller reported that a 17-year-old male neighbor, armed with a knife, had attempted to enter his house using force.

When the suspect became aware that law enforcement had been called, he fled into the woods on foot, Goulet said. The homeowner reported being slightly injured while trying to keep the front door shut and the suspect out. The victims knew the name of the juvenile, who is familiar to law enforcement. And, upon checking his name in the state system, it was determined he had five active juvenile warrants.

Deputies were able to make contact with the juvenile via cell phone in an attempt to convince him to surrender. A perimeter was established and the Mayall Road was shut down to motor vehicle traffic. Neighbors were encouraged to remain in their houses during the incident.

Members and K-9 teams from the state police, wardens service and Cumberland and Westbrook police departments assisted in the search. At 6:45 p.m., as darkness fell, the search was suspended, Goulet said.

On Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 9:45 a.m. sheriff’s deputies received information that the juvenile and his girlfriend were at the Bradbury Mountain Campground in Pownal. Deputies and state troopers responded and the suspect was located along with his girlfriend. The juvenile fled on foot after seeing deputies, Goulet said.

A perimeter was established in the area of Hallowell Road and Libby Road in Pownal. Deputies were assisted by game wardens, state troopers and K-9 teams from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, North Berwick police, and the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office. The juvenile was tracked and located at about 3:10 p.m. hiding about 50 feet up a tree, eventually giving up and taken into custody.

The unidentified juvenile male was charged with criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and assault, stemming from the incidents on Tuesday afternoon.

Also arrested was Danielle R. Brown, 22, of 282 Mayall Road, Gray, on a warrant for failure to pay fine.
