BOOTHBAY — After experiencing a declining Monarch butterfly population in recent years, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens (CMBG) decided to become a certified Monarch Waystation. The Gardens are providing the right kinds of plants, especially milkweeds, to support a population of Monarch butterflies. CMBG has committed 5,000 square feet to the project. CMBG experienced a Monarch caterpillar and butterfly boom during the 2014 summer season as a result of this undertaking. Home gardeners can also become waystations with as little as one square yard of land. Monarch Watch will provide plants for those who do not have another source, and home gardeners can apply online at monarchwatch.org.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
