FALMOUTH – Window restoration company Bagala Window Works of Falmouth said Monday that it had closed on its purchase of 677 Main St. in downtown Westbrook, a former church.

The company first came to city officials in July about purchasing a small strip of city-owned land next to Riverbank Park. The City Council approved a lease agreement for the land in August, which has been used as a small parking lot for previous tenants.

In late July, the company outlined plans to renovate and restore the building, focusing on a number of aging stained-glass windows and other features. Bagala Window Works, which has operated since 1988, would use the renovated building as its headquarters, acting as a showroom and as a shop.

Marc Bagala, owner of Bagala Window Works, said in an email Monday that he plans to apply for the building permit this week “to get the conversion going as soon as possible.”

He added that the company’s expected move-in date is Dec. 15, with an open house and grand opening to be scheduled for sometime in late spring.

Listed by PoGo Realty, the building was under contract for $176,500, and was listed at 1,349 square feet.

Bagala said that his company is focused on preservation, and through constantly working on historic buildings has looked to operate in a building of historic value.

“Potentially having a permanent home in an 1885 building is just really, really exciting,” he said in July. “We would love to bring that back to the way it would have looked 100 years ago.”

Bagala Window Works focuses on preservation while improving the energy efficiency of historic windows and doors. The company also offers reproduction of historic windows, and is working on a large project with the Portland Observatory. Bagala also recently completed a window restoration project at Walker Memorial Library in Westbrook. The company normally has a staff of around 10 employees.
