KENNEBUNK — Ryan Whalen scored two goals on assists from Jan Rutrle as host Kennebunk beat York 3-1 in a WMC boys soccer game at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday.
The pair hooked up to open the scoring in the first half, but the Wildcats (1-2) responded with a goal from Zach Gauthier.
Rutrle found Whalen again in the second half to put the Rams (2-1) back on top for good, and Pat Gassman sealed the victory with a goal of his own, which was assisted by Collin Campbell.
Kennebunk’s Tyler Dickinson and York’s Connor Smith both made six saves in goal.
POLAND 2, WELLS 0
WELLS — Poland took advantage of a pair of corner kicks in the first half, as the Knights scored both their goals on set pieces in a 2-0 victory over host Wells in a WMC boys soccer game on Thursday.
Owen Priola and Cody Kostro tallied the goals for Poland.
Wells’ Chandler Bridge and Poland’s Zach Lowe both stopped three shots in net for their respective teams.
Field Hockey
WELLS 1, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 0
OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Takara McDermott scored late in the first half for the only goal of the contest in a 1-0 victory for Wells over host Old Orchard Beach in a WMC field hockey game on Thursday.
The goal was McDermott’s third of the season.
Volleyball
KENNEBUNK 3, LAKE REGION 0
NAPLES — Visiting Kennebunk flexed its muscle in a Class A volleyball match on Thursday, as the Rams swept Lake Region 25-8, 25-13, 25-12.
The Rams (2-1) were dominant on serves, as Meg Dube, Sam Witkus (10-straight points to start second set) and Madi Harakles (five-straight to end third set) all strung together consecutive service points.
Golf
CAPE ELIZABETH 7, WELLS 0
CAPE NEDDICK — Seamus McDonough shot a team-low 48, but it wasn’t enough for host Wells avoid a sweep at the hands of Cape Elizabeth in a WMC golf match at Cape Neddick Country Club on Thursday.
Reese McFarlane led the Capers with a 39, and all of Cape’s top six golfers carded sub-50 scores.
Shawn Ramsey and Cole Greaves both shot a 53 for the Wariors.
The Capers won the team medal 172-211.
FREEPORT 4, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 3
OLD ORCHARD BEACH — A two-stroke advantage in total team score was the difference as visiting Freeport edged Old Orchard Beach in a WMC golf match at Dunegrass Golf Club on Thursday.
The Falcons (1-1) narrowly beat out the Seagulls (0-3) in the team medal, 214-216.
Erik Boucher (48), Nate Doody (53) and Rebecca Greenlee (70) all won individual matches for Old Orchard Beach.
Freeport got match wins from Jeremy Frick (52), Wayne Cushing (50) and Scott Donohue (54).
