Your picture of the demolition of the old municipal building on Wednesday, Aug. 27, is a grim reminder that, unlike the building, we are not ridding ourselves of the lack of fiduciary responsibility of the people who have occupied it. They have taken it to the McClellan building and unfortunately keeping this legacy alive and well.
When my wife and I moved to Brunswick in 2000, the town had a population of about 20,000 and a budget of $37 million. In 2013, the town had a population of just over 19,000 and a budget of $ 58 million. In 2000, the population was aging but there were still about 3,000 students in the School Department and a budget of $24 million. The population has aged further still and the student population has dropped to just over 2,400 yet the budget has increased to $35.8 million. Very little else has changed and as far as the School Department is concerned one could make a case that it is not performing as well as 14 years ago.
Change is inevitable but not change for the worse. I would ask my fellow taxpayers isn’t it about time we change the Town Council to one more fiscally responsible?

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
