AUBURN (AP) — Officials in Lewiston and Auburn are determining the impact of a Canadian National Rail decision to suspend service to Auburn’s truck-and-rail hub.
Canadian National announced it’s discontinuing service effective Nov. 15. Spokesman Mark Hallman said shipping via the Auburn facility no longer made financial sense.
The Auburn hub opened in 1994 and was expanded in 2000. It offers freight shipping between Canada’s ports and New England and the rest of the U.S. via the Canadian National Railway and the St. Lawrence and Atlantic. The current owner of the St. Lawrence and Atlantic and the Auburn facility declined comment.
Auburn Mayor Jonathan LaBonte told the Sun Journal that the current situation shows how officials have failed to promote the Auburn hub’s loading capacity.
