OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Blueberry Plains, a quiet spot that sits on the eastern side of Ross Road, near the Saco border, is now sporting a new informational kiosk.
The structure stands at the front of the town-owned property, welcoming visitors. The kiosk was constructed by conservation commission members, and there are plans to put up a similar kiosk at other public open spaces in town, said Conservation Commission Chairman John Bird.
The front of the kiosk has information about the property, and the back side has a chalkboard, where people can leave comments or messages.
The property, as the name suggests, is home to low bush blueberries.
“It’s a nice place to go to walk your dog, catch some sun, and pick blueberries in season,” said Bird.
According to information from the kiosk, the plains feature sandy roads and trails that have been on the property for decades. Hikers should note that trails cross over private property.
Though there have been several clean-up efforts on the property, there are some remains left of an old bottle dump, and hiking shoes are recommended.
Walking trails are open from dusk to dawn, and there are no restroom facilities.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
