Running for a Reason 5K

Standish Recreation’s annual Running for a Reason 5K will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, at Saint Joseph’s College beginning at 9 a.m. You can still pre-register by Aug. 15 at 4 p.m. online at www.running4free.com. Pre-registration fees for a family (four or more immediate family members) is $48. Cost for a single entry is $17. Event day registration begins at 8 a.m. at the start line at Alfond Center and the cost is $22 each, including families.

The race route beginning at Saint Joseph’s College allows for occasional breezes from Sebago Lake along with fabulous views. The college is located at 278 Whites Bridge Road, Standish. Trophies will be awarded to the overall winner for both male and female, and to the top male and female finishers in multiple age categories.

This year, the “reason” for the annual 5K is to help raise money for the Standish/Gorham ATV Club to help them purchase a tractor necessary for trail maintenance. Farmers Markets

Each Saturday in Steep Falls there are two farmers markets taking place. One is held at the Steep Falls Library from 9 a.m.-noon, and the Steep Falls Farmers Market is open every Saturday through October from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Check them out and buy local produce, fruit, pork, beef, eggs, plants, vegetable seedlings, bread, baked goods, honey, gluten free and even jewelry and health and beauty needs. Hazardous Waste Collection

Hazardous waste collection day will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Standish Transfer station located on Moody Road from 8 a.m.-noon. Proof of residency is required along with a current transfer station sticker.

Janet Neal, a member of Lakeside Quilters, holds her child’s quilt that will be displayed at the group’s annual quilt show at the Standish Congregational Church, 25 Oak Hill Road, Standish. This year’s theme is celebrating children’s storytime quilts. Admission is by donation and there will also be a members’ sale table, Chinese auction, vendors, lunch and tickets for a raffle quilt.
