CUMBERLAND — Drew Powell of Bangor came out in the second pairing of the morning to post a three- under- par 69 and grab the lead after the first round of the 2014 Maine Junior Amateur Championship at Val Halla Golf and Recreation on Tuesday.

Heading into today’s second and final round, Powell held a one-stroke lead over defending champion Will Kannegieser of Minot, who shot a 70 that included seven birdies on his card.

Though not entirely a two-man race at this point, Powell and Kannegieser share a comfortable lead over a group of golfers who will look to make up strokes.

Luke Ruffing of Manchester is in third after an opening round 75. Christopher Billings of Topsham leads a group of four at four-over 76. Drew Kane, Macarthur Kim and Cameron Letourneau also stand at 76.

BOWDOINHAM’S Tyler O’Connor, left, and Topsham’s Caleb Manuel watch their shots during the MSGA Junior Amateur Championship at Val Halla Golf and Recreation at Cumberland on Tuesday.

Ryan Collins of Cape Elizabeth holds the lead after opening with 78. Just three shots back are Cape’s Austin Legge and Cole Anderson of Camden, who each opened with an 81.

On the girls side, 14-yearold Lauren Schonewolf of Cape Elizabeth has the lead after shooting the best round of the day with 78. Though playing in the 13- 14 age flight, she is still able to win the overall title as all girls are competing from the same set of tees.

Leading the way in the 15- 17 flight is Fairfield’s Kelsie Dessent, who shot an 82 to take a comfortable lead within the flight.

The 12-and-under flight holds the only tie after day one, with Evan Glicos and Ryder Henry even after both opening with a 43 on Val Halla’s back nine. The two will be paired with Ryan Stimson in the final group today to duel it out for nine more holes and the crystal that comes with being state champion.
