ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) — Nu’Keese Richardson’s comeback try with the Indianapolis Colts has been cut short.

Two days after the Colts signed the receiver, they decided to let him go. Richardson was trying to jump start a career that was derailed after he pleaded guilty to one count of attempted robbery in January 2010.

Indy replaced Richardson on the roster by signing linebacker Phillip Hunt on Tuesday. The 6-foot-1, 254-pound Hunt played in 22 games with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011 and 2012. Hunt spent all of last season on injured reserve after getting hurt during the preseason. He has 15 tackles and three sacks in his career.

Richardson started his college career at Tennessee but was booted off the team after playing just nine games. He finished his college career at the University of Pikeville, an NAIA school in Kentucky.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rams coach Jeff Fisher says it is “unlikely” quarterback Sam Bradford, coming off knee surgery, will play in the preseason opener.

Bradford has said he feels fine with no worries. He missed the final nine games last season and is wearing a brace on the left knee.

Fisher said Tuesday night that for now he’s seeing enough from Bradford on the practice field. He plans to use Bradford later in the preseason.

Fisher said offensive tackle Jake Long, also coming off knee surgery, would be held out Friday. Center Scott Wells also is unlikely to play against New Orleans.

Raiders

NAPA, Calif. (AP) — Oakland Raiders projected starting tight end David Ausberry is scheduled to have knee surgery and will miss Friday’s preseason opener against Minnesota.

Ausberry has not practiced this week and did not attend Tuesday’s workout as a spectator, like the rest of Oakland’s injured players. Coach Dennis Allen was tightlipped when discussing the issue and didn’t disclose the exact nature of the injury or what knee Ausberry hurt.

A seventh-round draft pick, Ausberry missed all of 2013 after suffering a serious shoulder injury during the Raiders second preseason game in New Orleans. He later underwent surgery and was placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Despite that, Ausberry was listed as Oakland’s starter when the team released the first depth chart of camp.

Lions

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions appear to be thin on talent at cornerback, counting on veteran Rashean Mathis and secondyear pro Darius Slay to be starters.

Behind them, only Cassius Vaughn has significant experience in the NFL.

Mathis says if critics think the group is the team’s weak link, he hopes to prove them wrong.

Detroit’s cornerbacks will face opponents for the first time this year on Saturday night at home against the Cleveland Browns in an exhibition game.

Mathis believes Slay is ready to be a first-string player in his second season, replacing Chris Houston, who was cut in June because the team did not know when he would recover from foot surgery.

Broncos

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Marvin Austin was an afterthought in the Denver Broncos’ $110 million defensive makeover this offseason.

Long after fellow free agents DeMarcus Ware, Aqib Talib and T.J. Ward signed their mega deals and posed with their orange jerseys, Austin slipped into town in May and quietly began his latest comeback.

The fourth-year defensive tackle who signed a one-year, $570,000 contract might just prove to be general manager John Elway’s latest rummagesale find to produce a big payoff.

Seahawks

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Jeron Johnson knows this is all going to end. That eventually Kam Chancellor will be back at strong safety and patrolling the Seattle Seahawks secondary.

For now, Johnson is going to do all he can to leave a strong enough impression that should Chancellor ever need a break, the secondary will get along just fine.

Johnson is beginning his fourth season with the Seahawks, going from the undrafted rookie out of Boise State who fought to make the roster to the established backup to Chancellor as Seattle’s strong safety. But his role for Seattle goes beyond that.

With Chris Maragos leaving for Philadelphia in free agency, Seattle has no true backup for All-Pro Earl Thomas at free safety. So for now, Johnson must know the free safety role as well.

Bills

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Eager to return to practice, Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone has little time for questions.

Marrone provided mostly blunt one-word or one-sentence answers before practice Tuesday, when they Bills returned to training camp following a preseason-opening loss.

Aside from the loss, there was nothing new Marrone said that stuck out after reviewing the film of Buffalo’s 17-13 defeat to the New York Giants in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, on Sunday.

And “getting better” was the only message Marrone said he had for his players.

If that’s the case then the Bills have plenty of work ahead, and little time to get it done during a short turnaround between games.

Buffalo will practice only twice this week before traveling to play the Carolina Panthers on Friday.
