WALDOBORO — The Downeast School of Massage held commencement exercises for four new massage therapists from the 53rd graduation class and approximately 50 guests on July 19 at the school in Waldoboro.

Kat Pound represented her class by speaking to the audience at graduation. Memories surfaced with laughter, gratitude, and tears representing the deep bonding shared by this class over the course of this year.

Nancy Dail, director of the school, delivered a speech that challenged the graduates to be soulful with their practice and recognize the calling of their vocation. She quoted Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken” and suggested that they all take a path that will make a difference in many people’s lives that they touch. Emily Waltz Lash, assistant director, assisted with the diplomas and flowers. A reception followed the graduation ceremonies.

Graduating were: Bethany Blastow of Waldoboro, Kate Gerencer of Yarmouth, Heather Peaslee of Chelsea, and Kat Pound of Rockport.

In business for more than 34 years, the 600-hour curriculum at DSM is Maine state licensed and approved for graduating students to apply for licensure as massage therapists. The 10-month program includes extensive instruction in anatomy, physiology, massage, clinic, kinesiology, pathology, reflexology, deep tissue therapy, hydrotherapy, to name a few, and, depending on the student’s major, intensely focused course work in sports massage, shiatsu, or energy courses.

THE DOWNEAST School of Massage is accepting applications for the September 2014 program. Call 832-5531 for a catalog or email at downeastschoolofmassage@gmail.com.
