SANFORD — Voters will elect three city councilors in November, and at least two of the three incumbents will be in the running.

Councilor Joe Hanslip said he’ll seek a fourth council term, while Deputy Mayor Maura Herlihy said she’ll probably run for re-election.

On June 17, Diane Connolly was appointed until Dec. 31, to fill the remainder of the first year of a three-year term that became vacant upon the resignation of Ken Burgess. She did not respond on Friday to a message about whether she plans to run for the remaining two years of the term.

Nomination papers for council, Sanford School Committee and trustee positions on the quasi-municipal Sanford Water District and separate Sanford Sewerage District become available Aug. 11 and must be returned to the city clerk’s office by 5 p.m. Sept. 22.

According to City Clerk Sue Cote, two three-year school committee terms are available. Incumbents are Thomas Miscio and school board Chairwoman Kendra Williams.

There is one three-year term on the Sanford Water District, currently held by Roland Cote, and two three-year terms on the Sanford Sewerage District; incumbents are Andrew Marby and Keith Patterson.

Hanslip said it has been a challenging time in Sanford over the past few years, as the city tries to boost the economy and cope with infrastructure needs: “How to do more with less, given the economic challenges and revenue sharing cuts from Augusta,” he said.

Hanslip also pointed to growing pains that go along with making the transition from a town to a city.

Still, the challenges are intriguing.

“It’s been an exciting time to be in,” he said.

Herlihy said she expects she’ll run for re-election. She said the city is moving in a “great” direction, pointing to the new high school and regional technical center. She said the city is taking small steps in the right direction to boost existing businesses. Sanford also offers a wonderful quality of life, she said, pointing not only to the popularity of the Sanford Farmer’s Market, but the innovation from the trail committee that resulted in the recent Farm-to-Farm Trail Walk.

Candidates must be registered to vote in Sanford. Nomination for municipal offices requires a minimum of 50 signatures of registered Sanford voters.
