Standish Fire/EMS Awards
Saint Joseph’s College was the setting in June for the Standish Fire/EMS Annual Banquet, where the awards for the 2013 response year were given out.
Brent Libby, chief of Standish Public Safety, emphasized how much time and dedication that the following people put into providing our community with emergency response coverage. Standish Fire/EMS has a dynamic 24/7 system of coverage that ranges from on-call, per-diem, part-time and with only two full-time administrative position. The countless hours that most of the 80-85 responders put into calls, trainings and coverage details ensure that the people in our community get the service they need.
The value of the work they do for our town is worth much more than what the job pays and it is extremely difficult to get new members that can commit the time to the training needed. Keep your eyes and ears open if this interests you, as Standish Fire/EMS will be holding a membership/hiring drive in the near future in order to bolster the numbers of people able to respond.
Awards were received by Captain Ray Sampson, Officer of the Year; Colton Houle, Firefighter of the Year; Rhonda Hubbard, EMS Provider of the Year; Ben Keilty, Recruit of the Year; and Tom Minton, Espirit De Corp Award. Administrative Service Awards were presented to Linda Doiron for her years of service as Crew Chief on Weekend Crew 1 and Everett Parsons for his continued dedication to the motoring public of Standish.
The following people were recognized for their years of service for the years 2012 and 2013:
Adam Lord, five years of service (2012); Peter Gilchrist, James Paul and Matthew Warren for 10 years of service (2012) and Vicki Stevens, Nicholas Calvert and Jay Barta for 10 years of service (2013); Shaun Doiron, Justin Dresser, Jack Freitas, Benjamin Haskell and Debra Hubbard for 15 years of service (2012) and Ralph Matta also for 15 years of service (2013) and Kevin Leeman for 20 years of service (2013).

Petitioners Establish Hotline
The Standish Petitioners Committee has established a telephone hotline – 207-615-0575 – for voters in Standish to provide information, and streamline the collection of signatures for a “Petition to Amend the Municipal Charter.”
If successful, Standish voters will have a chance to vote on a Charter Amendment that would limit Town Councilors to a maximum of two consecutive three-year terms. After the two terms, councilors would be required to wait three years to run again for a council seat.
According to Walter Wasson, one of the petitioners, “Response to the petitions has been phenomenal. Residents have been asking where we’ll be so that others can sign the petition. With the urgency to obtain a minimum of 804 signatures, the committee felt it was important to give the residents a way to reach us other than our website and word of mouth. You can now call a number and speak with someone for more information or to arrange to meet with one of us.”
Dan Kasprzyk, Gary Lind, William Napolitano, Lou Stack, and Walter Wasson filed an affidavit for a petition to amend the municipal charter on July 17, and received the petitions on July 22. In order to qualify for the November ballot, signatures need to be submitted at least 45 days before the election.
