PORTLAND — The chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee is helping Maine Democrats rally around the candidates at the top of their ticket.
The event with U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida is being held at the Portland Public Library on Monday.
The rally, called “Women Take Action 2014,” will focus on issues the party says are critical to women, like access to preventative care and equal pay.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike Michaud, 1st District Rep. Chellie Pingree and 2nd District candidate Emily Cain are expected to attend. Senate candidate Shenna Bellows is participating in a 350-mile walk across the state, but members of her staff are expected to attend.
Mary Erin Casale, executive director of the Maine Democratic Party, says Republicans’ “outdated policies” have held women back.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
