MLB suspends Padres’ Maybin 25 games

CHICAGO (AP) — San Diego Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin was suspended 25 games by Major League Baseball on Wednesday for testing positive for an amphetamine.

Maybin said in a statement released by the Major League Baseball Players Association the failed test was the result of a change in the medication he was using to treat Attention Deficit Disorder.

Under the drug agreement between MLB and its players’ union, 25 games is the penalty for a second positive amphetamine test. A first positive results only in six unannounced follow-up tests over the next year.

The 27-year-old Maybin was batting .247 with one home run and nine RBIs in 62 games this season.

Tigers trade for Rangers’ Soria

NEW YORK (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have reinforced the back end of their shaky bullpen, acquiring closer Joakim Soria from the Texas Rangers for minor league pitchers Jake Thompson and Corey Knebel.

The trade was completed Wednesday night during Texas’ rain-shortened loss to the New York Yankees. Soria says he was informed of the deal during the delay at Yankee Stadium.

Soria is 1-3 with a 2.70 ERA and 17 saves in 19 chances. Detroit has been looking to upgrade a relief corps that ranked 12th out of 15 American League teams with a 4.37 ERA.

Soria moves from the last-place Rangers to the AL Central-leading Tigers and gets reunited with the closer he replaced in Texas this season. Joe Nathan, a Rangers reliever from 2012-13, has a 5.89 ERA and 20 saves in 25 tries this year for Detroit.

Broncos owner giving up control

DENVER (AP) — Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen is giving up control of the team as he battles Alzheimer’s disease.

The team announced Wednesday that the 70-year-old Bowlen will no longer be a part of the team’s daily operations. Team president Joe Ellis will take over after being named as the Broncos’ chief executive officer.

The Broncos say the ownership of the team is held in a trust in hopes that one of Bowlen’s children will run the team one day.

Under Bowlen’s guidance, the Broncos made six Super Bowl appearances and won six AFC titles.

Chiefs, RB Jamaal Charles reach deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles has agreed to a contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs announced the deal Wednesday night.

The two-year extension runs through the 2017 season, a person familiar with the contract said on condition of anonymity because the team didn’t disclose terms of the contract.

The six-year NFL veteran ran for 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns last year to help the Chiefs reach the playoffs. He also had 70 catches for 693 yards and seven more TDs as Kansas City went 11-5 before losing to Indianapolis in an AFC wild-card game.
