SANFORD — Robert Ruse allowed just three hits over eight shutout innings and the Sanford Mainers took advantage of three key errors to clobber the New Bedford Bay Sox 7-0 in a NECBL baseball game on Tuesday night at Goodall Park.
Ruse, a senior from the University of Maryland, struck out 11 and walked none as he improved to 2-2 on the season.
On the offensive side, Drake Parker, Caden Bailey, Matt Harris, Kendall Partick and Walker Pennington all had two hits for Sanford (19-12), which was shutout for five innings by New Bedford (8-26) starter Brad Labozetta before scoring three times in the sixth thanks to a RBI single by Sam Dexter and a pair of wild pitches that scored Parker and Dexter.
The Mainers added three more in the seventh thanks to a Bay Sox error that allowed Harris to score, and another error that allowed both Patrick and Pennington to touch home.
Bailey then finished the scoring with a single that plated Stevie Berman in the eighth, with Jacob Marks then pitching a perfect ninth in relief of Ruse to close out the win.
Sanford is back in action tonight as it heads to Vermont to take the Mountaineers, who lead the Mainers by 1.5 games for first place in the Northern Division. Ben Wessel (0-2, 2.07 ERA) will get the start for Sanford.
