2014 Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Preview

HEBRON — Whether the West all-stars are on offense or defense during Saturday’s Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl at Waterhouse Field in Biddeford, it’s a good bet that a Sanford player will be in the middle of a play. The Spartans will have two representatives on the field: offensive lineman Jed Scott and linebacker Colby Perigo.

The West team also has an added Sanford flavor, as Spartans head coach Mike Fallon is running the West defense.

“That’s definitely comfortable, since we’re basically running the same defense we’ve been running at Sanford,” Perigo said of having Fallon as part of the coaching staff.

An active linebacker during his time at Sanford, Perigo will be part of a defense that hopes to contain the East offense, after that unit torched the West in winning last year’s game.

“We want to shut them down, prove a point that we can play some defense over here,” said Perigo. “We’re going to be good; we’re going to be ready.”

On the other side of the ball is Scott, who will be part of what he said could be a dominant offensive line. Scott, the Gaziano Award winner as the state’s best senior offensive lineman, will be joined on the line by the likes of Thornton Academy’s Ian Paul and Bonny Eagle’s Isaiah Reynolds.

Both Scott and Paul lamented at Lobster Bowl media day at Hebron Academy on Tuesday that they were excited to play with Reynolds ”“ a 300-pound menace on both lines ”“ rather than against him.

Scott also noted that the West’s stable of running backs and athletic quarterbacks will make for a fun time for the offensive lineman.

“The hole doesn’t have to be too big for them to get through,” said Scott, “so that’s nice.”

Both players said they were honored to be representing Sanford in the game, and that they wanted to show the rest of the state what Sanford football is all about.

“To see the talent on the field is pretty cool,” said Scott. “Just to see all the players you’ve played with before and going against them and preparing for them, and to finally play with them is definitely fun.”

The duo reminisced about not having a great time the last time they played at Waterhouse, when the Spartans lost to Biddeford, 28-6, last October. Both players said they were hoping for a better outcome this time around at the fabled field.

“I’m pumped. It’s definitely going to be a great game,” said Perigo.
