Girl Scouts Troop No. 1553 has provided 16 hours of community service by participating in a food drive distribution program run by Brian Litchfield at John F. Kennedy School in Biddeford. Hannaford supermarkets also participated in the monthly program by offering fresh fruits and vegetables, promoting healthy eating choices. This public service is for families of all levels of income. The scouts also entertained children and offered free books. Pictured, from left, are Grace York Jr., Ayla Aldrich, Abby Michaud, Olivia Boucher and Lily Melton, all Cadettes; and leaders, Caroline York, far left, and Carmen Doliber, far right. The program at the school will resume in September, and the girls are working toward their Silver Award.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
