Free gazebo concert series

The Gorham Recreation Department is sponsoring a series of free summer concerts from 6:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday evenings at the gazebo on the municipal lawn next to Baxter Memorial Library, 71 South St.

The Casco Bay Concert Band kicks off the series on July 1.

The other concerts include Jim Gallant Band on July 8; Common Ground Band, July 15; Delta Knights Band, July 22; North of Nashville, July 29; Tricky Britches, Aug. 5; and Michael Plourde, Aug. 12

Free parking is available along South Street or in the Gorham municipal parking lot.

Historical archives open on Thursday

Gorham Historical Society’s archives building, 28 School St., is open from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Thursdays until October.

The archives contain genealogical records and scrapbooks with information about early Gorham families.

Morin receives Huntington history award

The Huntington University history department has honored Stephanie Morin of Gorham with the S.G. Whittle Johnston Memorial Award.

The award goes to the junior or senior history major who submits the most outstanding work of original scholarship.

Morin, a senior history and public relations major who graduated this spring, received the award for her paper on “Jinnah’s Pakistan: The Transformation of the Communal Problem in India to an International Dilemma.”

“Stephanie is a highly motivated and engaging student,” said Tim Smith, associate professor of history. “Her argument and understanding of history have been of an excellent standard, demonstrating a high degree of insight, perception and intellectual vigor. She is highly regarded by the entire history faculty at Huntington University, and she is a worthy winner of the 2014 S.G. Whittle Johnston prize.”

Morin received a plaque and a cash prize.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service reported on June 20 that the U.S. public debt was $17,529,945,473,040.66.
