Food Train supporters thanked
Brenda Orach, chairwoman of social ministry at Trinity Lutheran Church, said that AJ’s Market and the Brown Street neighborhood played a leading role in supporting a food drive for the Westbrook Food Pantry last month.
Orach said this year’s Food Train delivered more than 125 boxes of food to the food pantry, and money donated in collection jars added $3,200 to the drive. Many of the city’s businesses and churches participated to make the drive successful.
“One of the success stories for the project comes from a neighborhood market, AJ’s,” Orach said.
She said Alfred Jacob opened the store on Brown Street about a year ago, and she said neighborhood children rallied to donate coins for a collection jar.
“Alfred said that the kids would put their change in the jar and some would even use change from their piggy banks,” Orach said. “Word spread fast through the neighborhood, and it became a challenge for the kids.”
Orach said that the store’s collection jar was not only filled but Jacob also had a plastic bucket holding donated coins.
