BRUNSWICK

Brunswick police stopped more than 120 vehicles over a two-week period in May as a result of a stepped-up seatbelt enforcement program.

Police participated in the 2014 Buckle Up — No Excuses campaign between May 19 and June 1.

According to Deputy Police Chief Marc Hagan, officers worked 11 four-hour details where their primary directive was seatbelt enforcement. Half of those details occurred between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m.

Police said 80 percent of the tickets issued were for seatbelt violations. The remainder was a combination of speeding, failing to provide insurance and expired inspections.

Overall, 46 seatbelt citations and 25 warnings were issued.

Police also issued:
— Seven warnings for defects;
— Five citations for drugs;
— Five citations for insurance;
— One criminal citation for driving
with a suspended license;
— One criminal citation for operating
after suspension;
— One criminal citation for drug possession.

The enforcement detail was funded by a $3,000 grant by the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety for the purposes of enforcing and educating drivers about Maine’s seatbelt laws.

The 2014 Buckle Up program was held in conjunction with the National Highway Safety Administration’s Click It or Ticket program.
