LACONIA, N.H. — Sanford (2-1) traveled to Laconia to face the Muskrats (0-3) in its second road game of the season on Sunday. Jeff Singer made his first start for the Mainers, and what a start it was, as he took a one-hitter into the seventh inning in the Mainers’ 2-0 victory.

It was all about the pitching for the Mainers on Sunday, as Singer finished his night allowing just one hit, while walking two and hitting one batter along with striking out six Muskrats; all while throwing 94 pitches, 61 for strikes. Anthony Ciavarella entered in the eighth to complete a two-inning save, walking two, allowing one hit and locking down the Mainers second win in a row.

Sam Balzano (.308) went 2-for-4 on the day, same for Sam Dexter, and Matthew Pagano’s RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the first ”“ which scored Balzano ”“ proved to be the winning run.

Mariano Rivera Jr. made his first appearance for the Muskrats, delivering all that it was built up to be, as the Yankees draft pick threw six innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out seven. Rivera finished his day with 104 pitches.

The Muskrats threatened in the eighth inning against Ciavarella, getting a runner to third for the first time in the game. Jack Sundberg reached base with a lead-off walk, Cornelius Copeland then sacrifice bunted Sundberg to second. A groundout to short advanced Sundberg to third. Following a walk, Matt Byrne grounded out to short, ending the threat with two runners left on the corners for the Muskrats.

The Mainers added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch by Marc Skinner, scoring Sam Dexter, to put Laconia away for good.
